The Robot

  It's finished!

The robot

The robot consists of a 'head' with a magnet and lightsensor that can be accurately moved on an x-y axis around a large 48x48 base.
The chessboard is made from transparent plastic and sits over the robot raised by walls 13 bricks high so that we can use the light sensor to detect what's on a square. It's quite a large robot!
The pieces are magentic and have coloured (actually grey and black) circles of paper stuck to their bases to help with light-detection. The head can raise and lower the magnet to 'pick up' a piece and move it around.
