Great care is taken to produce a menu of style and integrity which is balanced with the right ingredients, enhanced by the perfect sauces and produced by careful, exact cooking. Our cuisine is not simply Spanish or flamboyantly French or indeed, robustly English, quite simply our cuisine is our own. A mixture of all these and more to bring you entrées of interest and puddings of delight, all perfectly presented. The result is an ever-changing menu at a prix fixé which the discerning will appreciate as the finest value and who will be surprised how little extra it will cost to eat at a real restaurant.

Andrew Edmunds is a bit of a Soho institution. Pleasant atmosphere, good quality modern British food to rival the most expensive restaurants, at a very good price. Tables upstairs probably have the best atmosphere, though being very popular you might as well take what you can get unless you book weeks in advance.

Conrad london Chelsea Harbour London SW10 0XG 020 7823 3000 Mediterranean Asian 7 days £20-£30
Named in part for its waterside location but more importantly the cuisine – Aquasia pays tribute to slick, modern design with subtle Asian references. The menu, inspired by Asian and Mediterranean influences, features beautifully executed dishes, derived from fresh, natural ingredients and an innovative use of herbs, bringing to life Chef de Cuisine Michael Gresslin’s extensive travels throughout Europe and Asia. The dining area interacts with the bar which, in turn, spills over into The Long Gallery – itself, visible from the hotel reception. During the day, natural light streams through a magnificent wall of glass (thrown open in fine weather for al fresco dining), offering an unimpaired view of the harbor and river. And in the evening the mood changes, as the play of light from a combination of optic fibers, floor lights and a palette of reds and blues transforms the space, to create a warmer, more intimate atmosphere. Situated within the exclusive environs of Chelsea Harbour, AQUASIA with its own private dinning room together with - DRAKES – our new waterside banqueting suite to complement our existing 13 private function rooms at the Conrad London, lie within easy access of the West End and Heathrow. We look forward to welcoming you soon, to experience for yourself, the latest that Conrad London has to offer by way of excellence.

45 St. Martin's Lane London WC2 0171 300 5500 Modern British 7 Days £30-£50
It's not very well signposted. It's in the lobby of St. Martin's hotel in St. Martin's Lane. You can't even tell it's a hotel, all you see is yellow light and a revolving door! Anyway, the decor is quite interesting, lots of black and white pictures everywhere. Looks a bit like IKEA, lots of pine and non-descript furniture (Phillipe Stark - ed). If you go there, it seems you have to wear black clothes, have very straight hair and wear those black rimmed glasses. Everyone looked like a clone of everyone else! The food was very nice though. The portions are huge and you are encouraged to order only a few dishes and share. I remember thinking, I wished we had ordered more. You only got a little taste of everything, and you wanted more. I tried the tuna on the bonito mash, and that was gorgeous. Our waiter was a bit odd. He was desperate to clear our plates away and during our starters, there was a pancake left. He picked the plate up and said "who wants this pancake". Very odd behaviour and one of our party got into a bit of an argument with him and after that the atmosphere was a bit strained. We were the last seating, so it wasn't like we were hogging the table. I'm sure it was quite expensive, but I wasn't paying so I don't know.

Great Eastern Hotel, Liverpool Street EC2M 7QN 020 7618 7000 Modern British Mon-Sat £30-£50
This was a bit of disappointment on the food front although the service and decor were fantastic. It is an absolutely beautiful interior with well spaced tables. Four of us went on a Thursday night and found it quite empty. The waiters are wonderful and very non-intimidating. Now the food - very very average. I had an artichoke salad as a starter and that was probably the best out of the three courses. I had lamb with kidneys for main and asked them to serve it without the kidneys - I got the kidneys but they did take them away when asked again!! The lamb was boring and didn't really taste of anything much. Desert was a chocolate sponge affair and was dry and dull. It is hugely overpriced for the quality of the food but would still be an impressive place to take people!
