The Eagle is the original food pub, established about ten years ago by Michael Belben and Richard Eyre (who has subsequently set up on his own). It set and has generally maintained the reference standard for a number of later establishments of the same type.
It is basically one large, wooden-floored room and the food is prepared right there, behind a bar running the entire length of the back wall, so you can see everything you are getting. The menu, typically including a soup, a pasta dish (which may or may not be vegetarian), the perennial "Bife Ana" (a tasty rare steak sandwich), three or four meat/poultry main courses, two fish main courses, cheese (often Spanish) and "Pasteis de Nata" (Portuguese custard tarts), is posted on blackboards behind the bar. Main courses currently (Jan 2002) range in price from £8.50 to £13.00. A short, well-chosen wine list (available by the bottle or by the glass) includes French and New World wines (£10.50-£13.50 per bottle). There are draft ales (from Charles Wells), Leffe lager on tap and a better-than-usual selection of soft drinks, including Fentimans' traditional ginger beer.
In this establishment the food's the thing. It is furnished with an assortment of second-hand tables and chairs (you may be allowed to move the chairs to a limited extent but you MUST NOT move any table!) and equipped with a weird assortment of shaggy old cutlery, some of which looks as if it must once have had a silver plating, of which, however, not a vestige survives.
The Eagle is situated on the edge of the City, a stone's throw from the offices of The Guardian newspaper, in an area (Clerkenwell) currently enjoying something of a renaissance, for which The Eagle itself certainly deserves a share of the credit. At lunchtime it attracts a mainly business clientele, but in the evenings the clientele is cosmopolitan. No reservations are taken, and at the end of the week, and particularly after one of those regular fulsome reviews that it always seems to be getting in, for example, the Evening Standard and Radio 4's "Food Programme", it is necessary to get there early to get a table at all. Surprisingly, perhaps, in view of its location, The Eagle is also a very popular venue for Sunday lunch.
Credit cards are not accepted but debit cards (Switch and Delta) and cheques (with appropriate guarantee) are. Piped music, the need for which is not obvious given the general level of noise in the pub, is irritatingly obtrusive at times.
Though the quality and imagination of the cooking remain generally high, the prices have been creeping up lately while the portions (particularly of fish) have been tending to shrink, occasionally to the point of seeming parsimonious and inadequate. But complain about this (or anything else) at your own risk - it could earn you a round telling off from the proprietor.
Given the crudeness of the environment, an establishment of this character depends for its success and reputation on the quality and value-for-money of the food. Any decline in these standards must be viewed as a serious defect.

Simple Pizza/Sandwich bar offering very authentic Neopolitan style pizzas for a mere £4.
Don't expect huge amouts of toppings, but do expect freshly prepared thin and crusty bases: Just how I like them - I probably have one from here about once a week!

Italian dining in pleasant surroundings with river views. While the food not the best (see Passione for that…), the atmosphere is excellent, and there's a dancefloor on which you can happily foxtrot the night away to live jazz. It's nice to see a venue with music and dancing that caters for a more mature audience.
