La Grenadine offers fresh food from modern-Europe cuisine, a high standard as well as offering substantial portions. Perfect for snuggling up on a frosty winter’s day, our restaurant’s cooling subterranean location means that it’s also not at all unpleasant or overly hot on a balmy summer’s evening. Eating surrounded by warm colors and its atmosphere is a fantastically intimate experience and one not widely available. Seize the opportunity while you can.

Latium 8 7 8 = 8 Booking Advised

21 Berners Street W1T 3LP 020 7323 9123 Italian 24 Hours £30-£50
Latium offers adventurous Italian cuisine, in simple modern surroundings. It's opposite the Sanderson Hotel, but thankfully has none of the Sanderson's snobbish exclusivity or rubbish service (although the Sommelier came across as a little bit arrogant). The food is generally superb, take a look at their website for a sample menu. At £25 for three courses, it doesn't break the bank either, although as ever with fancy restaurants, the extras (water, serice, etc) all add up to put it at the lower end of the £30-£50 bracket. The interior is a little bit too simple and stark: lots of modernist restaurant interiors come across as a bit cold and impersonal, and this is no exception. Despite this, I'd recommend it for the excellent food.

Lemongrass 8 7 7 = 7 Booking Advised

Sheen Lane, Mortlake, London SW14 020 8876 7571 Thai 7 days £10-£20
Lemongrass SW14 Choosing a restaurant for potential future in-laws is no piece of cake. There is no going back so I took my life into my own hands by suggesting that we try the Lemongrass Thai Restaurant a stone’s thrown from Mortlake station. Among a host of restaurants to choose from in East Sheen, the Lemongrass stands out from the competition down Sheen Lane with its snappy blue exterior and bright lights beckoning you in. At 8pm, the restaurant was still quiet and we were shown to our tables and then had the enjoyable dilemma of what to choose. The menu caters for vegetarians with a wide selection rather than the normal token offering while there is a helpful guide to the strength of all dishes depicted with symbols of a chilli. The fun of ordering is pronouncing each course as much as looking forward to the food itself. I ordered Kao Pud three or four times just so I could practice my Thai. We opted for a selection of starters which amounted to pork, prawn and beef in batter with sauces that varied in peppery potency. My girlfriend sampled vegetables in batter which, judging by her enthusiastic nodding, met with great approval. As for the main course, I can personally vouch for the chicken with garlic or Gai Tod which was simply fantastic. I can also confirm that the Thai Green curry met the strict family criteria and I could have carried on eating the egg fried rice for several days. The ambience in the restaurant was well judged as the background music didn’t drown out conversation and the Lemongrass got pleasantly busy by the time we had tucked into our starters. As for the service, it bordered on telepathic without being intrusive. As we turned to ask for a refill, our glasses were being filled with minimum of fuss. There was no Basil Fawlty fawning over us asking how we were every two minutes and I prefer it that way. Desert at the Lemongrass was equally superb with the cinnamon pancakes, ice cream and variety of sorbets the perfect way to round off the meal. For London prices, the bill of £80 for four with a decent house red wine didn’t cause universal grimacing and we even got chocolates with the bill which usually swings my vote. Owner Stan Stewart has a little gem in the Lemongrass and if you’re looking to impress your girlfriend’s parents with your choice of eateries then there is no finer establishment in London. Have a look for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

Possibly the finest Welsh restaurant in London. Almost certainly the only one. Attentive service and good quality ingredients in this small Stoke Newington restaurant. Reasonably interesting menu consists of Welsh dishes (think lamb and laver bread) with some gallic favourites for extra variety. Live Jazz on a Saturday night (at least when we visited) was good but a little intrusive.

Levant 8 8 9 = 8

Jason Court 76 Wigmore Street London W1H 9DQ 020 7224 1111 Middle Eastern 7 days £20-£30
Levant, while offering superb Middle Eastern food in very tasteful surroundings for a reasonable price, seems to be suffering either because of the slightly difficult to find location, or because of the fickle nature of London restaurant goers. When we ate here last night, our party were the only customers in the whole place. This didn't distract from the excellent evening we had, as we used the small private room off the main dining area - it seats about eight and creates a very cosy and intimate 'Moroccan' atmosphere. Service was, possibly because we had their complete attention, wonderful. I'm rather concerned that a restaurant as good as this can be so underwhelmed with customers. Definitely worth a try.
